AXA Life coverage for you, your family and your business
Japan’s public insurance covers a lot, but not everything. Each service below starts with what you already have through National Health Insurance, employee health insurance and the public pension, then looks at what’s missing. Product details, eligibility and premiums are set by AXA Life and explained in full before you apply.
For individuals & families
Life Insurance & Income Protection
If something happened to you, would your family be able to stay in Japan, keep up the rent or basic living expenses and keep the children in school? Japan’s survivors’ pension may be smaller than people expect, especially if you haven’t been paying into the system for long. Life insurance fills that gap with a lump sum or a monthly income for your family.
Income protection goes further. It pays a monthly benefit if illness or injury keeps you from working. This matters most for the self-employed and freelancers, because National Health Insurance doesn’t include the sickness allowance (傷病手当金) that company employees receive.
- Needs calculation: we look at your income, housing, children's education and existing public benefits to work out how much cover you actually need
- Lump sum or monthly income: choose the structure that suits your family's budget
- Families across borders: we explain how beneficiaries work when family members live in the Philippines or elsewhere
Good for: parents, main earners, mortgage holders, self-employed and freelancers.
Medical & Cancer Insurance
Japan’s public health insurance covers most treatment at 70%, and the high-cost medical expense system (高額療養費制度) limits what you pay each month. That’s a strong base, but some costs still fall on you: private or semi-private room charges, meals during a hospital stay, advanced treatments (先進医療) that aren’t covered by public insurance, and the income you lose while you recover.
Private medical and cancer insurance pays cash benefits for these situations, so you can focus on getting better instead of the bills. We explain clearly what public insurance already covers, so you don’t pay for protection you don’t need.
- Hospital and surgery benefits: daily or lump-sum payments when you're admitted or have an operation
- Cancer and serious illness: diagnosis benefits and support during long-term treatment
- Advanced treatment cover: help with the high cost of treatments outside public insurance
- Health conditions: we explain the health questions honestly and look at what options may be available if you have a pre-existing condition
Good for: anyone living in Japan long term, families with young children, people far from family support.
Savings & Retirement Planning
Some life insurance plans combine protection with long-term saving. You pay premiums over the years while building value you can use for retirement, your children’s education or a future move. Variable insurance (変額保険) invests part of your premium in funds, and foreign-currency insurance (外貨建保険) is denominated in currencies such as the US dollar.
These plans can be useful, but they are long-term commitments with real risks. Their value can go down with markets or exchange rates, and cancelling early can return less than you paid in. We’ll explain how each plan works, what it costs and what could go wrong, and help you decide whether it fits your goals at all.
- Goal-based planning: retirement, education funds or savings for life after Japan
- Clear risk explanation: market, currency and early-cancellation risk explained in your language before you decide
- Tax basics: an overview of life insurance premium deductions (生命保険料控除); for your own situation.
- Long-term review: regular check-ins as your income, family or plans change
Good for: long-term residents planning for retirement, parents saving for education.
Ongoing Policy Support & Claims
Our work doesn’t stop once your AXA Life policy starts. Insurance letters, renewal notices and claim forms all arrive in Japanese, and life changes like marriage, a new baby, a new job or a move all affect what you need.
As your agency, we stay your point of contact for the life of the policy. We explain every document, help you update your details, and walk you through a claim from start to finish.
- Claims help: we explain what's covered, help prepare documents and communicate with AXA Life for you
- Policy changes: address, beneficiary, payment method and coverage updates
- Annual review: a yearly check that your cover still matches your life
- Leaving Japan: we explain your options for keeping or ending your policy before you move
Good for: every Musubi client, included at no extra cost.
For business owners & companies
Key Person & Business Protection
In many small and mid-sized companies, the business depends on one or two people. If the owner or a key director passed away or couldn’t work, the company could lose sales, struggle to repay bank loans, and find it hard to keep paying staff.
Business protection insurance (事業保障) is owned by the company and pays out to the company. That money can cover loan repayments, keep operations running while you find a successor, or settle obligations to business partners.
- Risk check: we look at your loans, fixed costs and how much the business relies on each key person
- Loan and guarantee protection: funds to repay borrowings if the owner, who is often the personal guarantor, passes away
- Succession support: funding to help hand the business over smoothly
- Bilingual explanations: for foreign owners, partners and overseas head offices
Good for: owner-managed companies, businesses with bank loans, foreign-owned SMEs.
Executive Retirement Benefit Planning
Many Japanese companies pay a retirement benefit to directors when they step down (役員退職慰労金). Paying a large amount in one year can put pressure on cash flow, so companies often use corporate life insurance to build the funds over time.
We help you plan how much to prepare and when, so the payout fits your company’s finances and your own retirement plans. Corporate insurance tax treatment depends on the product and your circumstances.
- Retirement funding plan: timing and amount matched to your expected retirement
- Cash flow fit: premiums set around your company's budget
- Built-in protection: life cover for the executive while the fund grows
- Tax advisor coordination: we share the details your accountant needs
Good for: company directors and owners planning their own retirement.
Employee Welfare & Benefits
Good benefits help you hire and keep people, and they matter even more for international teams who don’t know the Japanese system. Company-arranged life and medical coverage shows staff that you’ll look after them and their families.
We help you design a benefits plan that fits your budget and your rules, and we explain it to employees in English, Japanese or Tagalog so they understand what they have.
- Staff life and medical coverage: protection for employees and their families
- Condolence and retirement payments: funding for the payments set out in your company rules
- Multilingual staff briefings: sessions in English, Japanese or Tagalog
- Ongoing administration help: support when staff join, leave or need to claim
Good for: companies with foreign staff, growing SMEs competing for talent.
